"I'm gonna be a daddy"

A couple days ago Lydia kept telling us she was going to be a daddy. Then she said, "I'm going to be a daddy because daddy's are nice." I can think of no better compliment then one from a pure, innocent, honest, little two year old.

Lydia loves to eat with her dad. Whenever he sits down to eat Lydia comes running, and if they're both eating she scoots her chair right next to his.

Jon's a very loving father and leads well by his example. The compliment from his little girl is evidence of the kind of dad he is.

8 wonderful years with the love of my life

8 Reasons I absolutely Adore my husband
  1. My weaknesses are his strengths; hence he completes me.
  2. The sound of his voice brings joy to my life.
  3. He has Christ-like love for little children and, because of that they love him.
  4. He's the Father of my children and also a loving father figure for many other children.
  5. He has a quiet air of humble confidence about him, which makes him a natural leader.
  6. He's appreciative, and compliments and words of love have always flown freely from him.
  7. He loves his Savior and is a great defender of truth.
  8. He's my Eternal Companion and there's no one in this world I'd rather spend eternity with. I am truly blessed to stand at his side.
I love you, Jon! Happy 8th Anniversary!

PS to celebrate we went to Boise last Friday and attended the Temple and went out to eat. We also did a little shopping. Big thanks to G & G Lindsey for keeping the kids! Tonight we took the kids out to New Plymouth to stay the night with G & G and Uncle Ben and Craig (we both have to go out to our Weiser office tomorrow and Ben's going to watch Hyrum and Lydia). Since we didn't have any kids we decided we might as well go out to eat again, so we did at one of our favs-- Fiesta Guadalajara. It was a very enjoyable Anniversary and we're both excited to make our 8th year our best year yet!

Hyrum's talk

Hyrum gave a talk in Primary today all by himself. In other words... I wrote his little talk for him last night and gave it to him to look over in sacrament meeting today. As he was reading over it not knowing what at least half of the words were, I let him know that was okay because I would be there to help him with it. Well, if you know my Hyrum, you know he doesn't need help with anything because he can do it all by himself. (He's kind of like his Dad in that regard... they can do anything until proven otherwise.) He informed me that he didn't need my help, but I reassured him that yes, he would need some help and I'd be there.

Sacrament ended and I took Lydia to nursery fully intending to come back to the chapel where they hold primary opening exercises to help Hyrum read his talk. Keep in mind he's only in kindergarten and reading sight words like... cat, dog, mom, dad, had, the, etc. Well, I spaced it and went straight to my class and didn't think an ounce about it. After Gospel Doctrine a friend of mine informed me that she had heard Hyrum's talk. My jaw dropped as I realized I had completely forgotten to go help him. She began laughing as she shared with me that he had read the entire talk himself replacing a lot of the correct words with his own. Such as, instead of reading "My mom's responsibility is to nurture" Hyrum sentence went like this: "My mom's repentance is to nurture." We had a good laugh together about a few other sentences before I made my way to the Primary president to apologize for being an irresponsible parent.

It's obvious Hyrum is not shy a bit about speaking in front of people or even reading words he doesn't know in front of people. That's one confident little boy we have! Keep it up Hyrum!

PS The picture is actually from Easter 2008, almost exactly a year ago (March 23rd).

Some of our favorite visitors

I'm sure all Jon's married siblings would agree that having the unmarried children (Ben, Marae, Elise and Craig) visit is a fabulous and much anticipated time, especially for the nieces and nephews. These four are amazing and we love them tons! We selfishly wish they'd all live by us... though I feel that may take an awful lot of bribing. Most likely more than we're capable of... sad for us! So until that day happens, if it ever does, we cherish the visits we have with them. Lyida's face lights up the moment she hears their names and it's nearly impossible to peel her away from them while they're here. (Can't say I mind that too much). Hyrum tries to act cool but secretly loves having them around also. We had a great weekend with them attending a musical fireside Saturday afternoon and a play, "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," that evening. Sunday we were also able to spend the day with them. Elise led us in some pretty fun and entertaining games.
Auralee (Elise's friend), Aunt Elise and Aunt Marae with their biggest fan, Lydia

Jon, Lydia, Marae, Ben C., Auralee & Elise. Thanks for visiting us we hope to see you again soon! PS don't worry, Elise, I'll remember what you said about Christmas. We'll be planning on you!

Hyrum's basketball

Hyrum played his 1st season of basketball this year. A church in Ontario hosts a league called Upwards. He loved playing and progressed quite a bit during the season. Today was his last game and he score 3 baskets including the very 1st one of the game. Way to go Hyrum! These are some pictures another Mom took so the quality's not to good because I had to scan them. I really need to start taking my camera with me more often.

First camping trip of the season

We broke out the trailer and boat this weekend. Jon's been ancy for weeks now to go camping and he finally got to go. He left Wednesday night with my brother, Dustin, who was in Boise for a few days for a class, and then the kids and I came Thursday evening. We went to an area I'd never been before, but that we really enjoyed. It's a campground in the Hell's Canyon area called Woodhead. We're thinking about going back next weekend even though we were skunked in the fish department. The weather was beautiful and Jon found a few antler sheds which are treasures to him :) Fun weekend with the family. Sorry no pictures... I took a little video but I need to remember to start take pictures.

The love of a boy

Before I left for Rigby I left a few little notes around the house for Jon and Hyrum. Some written on mirrors with dry erase marker. I came home to a beautiful note on one of the mirrors in my bedroom. Unfortunately, Lydia erased it before I had a chance to get a photo of it. The words read in six year old handwriting: "i love u mom your the bessteeest!!!"
The day after I got home we found this on the mirror in the downstairs bathroom (the one Jon uses). Hyrum is genuine in his love and we are blessed beyond words to be his parents! We love you, Hyrum!

More than just a trip...

158 E 1st N

After 55 years of calling this home, Grandma and Grandpa Hansen are moving. Some might say not necessarily by choice. They were presented an amazing offer by Dick Broulims (the owner of Broulims grocery store located directly behind their home) which grandpa initially turned down. After visiting with several of his children about the offer, they were able to do enough convincing and eye opening that he and grandma decided to take it-- $330,000 for their 100+ year old home sitting on 7 city lots. An amazing deal to all except two individuals so deeply rooted and attached to their home.

As you can imagine, after 55 years, 9 children, and 54 grandchildren, to say there is a lot to move is an extreme understatement. Especially, since grandma had/has a very hard time "wasting" AKA throwing away. My Mom felt that she needed to assist a little with their moving process and so she and my sister and I and a few of our kids made the trek over. We spent 6 days there moving, sorting, and going through not only physical belongings but years and years of memories. Words fail to describe that sort of mortal experience.

For me, the following pictures say more than words ever could. One set of long green stairs + one perfectly fit mattress + 2 fun cousins = loads of fun and millions of laughs

The infamous window among the cousins. This was a source of fun and trouble. We all seemed to have an obsession with sneaking out it during the night and sitting on the roof you can see. We'd eat candy or something simple just to say we did it. I don't think we ever manage to partake of the fun without grandma knowing. The trouble came each time we were caught... children!
The first thought that comes to mind with this picture is the memory of sitting on the floor, near where this picture was taken, and playing Rummy Royal with Shauntae and Eleisha. So many good times by those stairs.

The living room. When I was pregnant with Lydia I had a few sessions with a gentleman who taught me about hypnobirthing (a form a self-induced hypnosis during labor). At one point during a session he asked me to go to a place where I could feel completely safe, comfortable and relaxed. I immediately went to my grandparents living room. That's what that room meant to me.

A view from the living room into the kitchen

Kitchens are the heart of the home. So much nourishment comes from a kitchen. I was nourished from this kitchen in many ways, food being one of the least of them. In my college and later years there were many nights spent playing dominoes and visiting. I sewed with grandma at her kitchen table and received love and support during difficult times in my life. I am told by my parents that my kitchen sink resembles my grandma's kitchen sink. The way it's sets with the window and the plant behind the sink... I didn't consciously create that, though it's amazing what we do subconsciously.

This is the sewing room. Taunya and I had the fun and entertaining job of going through this room. What a daunting task, but 4 hrs later it was completed. There was a lot more to that room than the picture shows.

Due to mold in the house we didn't dare go in there without face masks. We found several interesting items during our time in that room. I believe what I'm reading there was one of those junk mail sweepstakes letters from the 80's. We did find some items of importance though including some memorabilia from grandpa's mission.

Grandma use to fit women for bras and apparently also used to sell breast prosthetics. By this point in our cleaning we needed a good laugh and these were a great catalyst! We hung a couple on the wall and randomly placed a few others throughout the house to offer good laughs to future visitors.

When you're not sure what something is, what's the best way to find out? See picture below...

Just kidding of course. Taunya and I emptied many many many jars of canned goods from as far back as 1962. Yes, that does say '62. You should have seen the nasty pile it all went into.

Not all was work while we were there. We spent a good amount of time visiting (mainly Taunya and I). We played Dominoes a couple nights and had some good laughs. These pictures are of Grandpa Handsome (as Lydia calls him) with Lydia, Grandma Shauna, Anikah and Savannah. If you look closely you can see Grandpa's harmonic in his hand; he's very musical as is my grandma, and he played a few songs for us.

Lydia was sick with a fever off and on the whole time we were there so you can tell by the photo she doesn't feel well. The last night we were there I had my cousin Mike and my grandpa offer her a blessing and right after that she started feeling better. (Now, two weeks later when I'm posting this, she reminds me that she got a blessing at Grandpa Handsome's house and then she felt better. Children are amazing and so close to the spirit.)

I've said it before, but Lydia is definitely a girly girl. Aunt Taunya is very good to do her girls' hair each day and each day Lydia requested that Aunt Taunya also do hers. She would tell me, "I want hers to do my hair. I want hers to do my hair." She was pretty adamant she didn't want me to do it. I'm now going to try to do her hair everyday. We got a lot of ribbon out of grandma's sewing room that will look cute.

Savannah and Anikah weren't exactly in the mood for a photo so this is the best I got of the three of them.

Jons conglomerate

Tony and I went looking for some animals in January. Tony thought it would be fun to play in the water so we spent most of the time playing.

The end results of of our frolicking in the water, Tony got water in his belt casing.
